Benson Memorial Library June 2015 — Present

Executive Director
  • Successfully lead a team of 8 staff members in the daily operations and advancement of the long term goals of a rural public library.
  • Developed a future focused strategic vision, accepted by the Library governance board, to guide the library's direction for the next 5-10 years.
  • Actively initiate and sustain successful relationships with local foundations and grant making agencies. In my 3 years as Executive Director, I have secured $135,000 in additional funding to grow services and maintain the library building through grants and private donors.  
  • Embarked on an ambitious modernization of library policies and procedures resulting in 21st century services that can be individualized for the community, resulting in a sustained increase in total library circulation by 8% in 2016 and 3% in 2017.
  • Created the position of Historian at the Benson Memorial Library, a full time role whose primary task is providing Titusville, PA with access to quality information about the community's local history and assisting individuals with genealogical research. 
  • Developed highly successful relationships with local community organizations to identify their needs and how the library can help through outreach and local public service.
  • Implemented an ambitious workplace change management program to reshape the library's work culture to a focused customer first workplace with community based library programming at its core.
  • Developed and adopted an evidence based decision culture with a robust system of data sets to measure library performance and customer satisfaction monthly.
  • Efficiently manage all of the Benson Memorial Library including all Financial, Human Resources, Facilities and Collection Management aspects of the service, with the development of monthly executive reports delivered to the Library Board.

Chattanooga Public Library April 2013 — June 2015

Coordinator of Tween/Teen Services
  • Successfully led the project to develop THE 2ND FLOOR, an innovative interactive library space dedicated to discovery & learning that merged traditional library collections with creative maker spaces, learning opportunities, an arcade, and an event space for ages 0-18 and their caregivers. The project proved to be highly successful, having steadily increased library visits and program attendance through the years, culminating with the library surpassing 1 million yearly checkouts in 2017.
  • Actively participated as a Senior Manager in the Leadership team setting the vision and operational directions for the library service.
  • Co-Developed DEV DEV, a highly successful month long coding and robotics camp for teens. After operating as library program for two consecutive summers, this program was adopted by the Public Education Foundation of Chattanooga and continues to be offered to students and teachers to this day as part of curriculum of Hamilton County Schools.
  • Redeveloped a staff of 8-10 employees in their daily operations to have more of a focus on delivering Youth Services programs mixed with traditional library services.
  • Coordinated youth services programs and material collections for 4 branch libraries within the city of Chattanooga, Tennessee to ensure that library events and collections were meeting the needs of each community it served.
  • Developed successful partnerships with other departments of the library as well as outside collaborators and businesses that led to an extensive slate of events and initiatives at the library.

Portland Public Library March 2010 — April 2013

Teen Librarian
  • Developed the Vision, Collection, and Programming for the brand new Teen Library in Portland, Maine. In my three years as the Teen Librarian the program became proven and strong example of teen librarianship 
  • Community Outreach: Established and managed relationships with community resources for teenagers including: Portland Police Department, Boys & Girls Club of Southern Maine, and local area high schools.
  • Collaborated with local organizations and community members to create high quality and low cost programs for teens. Partners included; Casablanca Comics, The Telling Room, musician Sonya Tomlinson, and  the Maine College of Art.

Cape May County Library May 2008 — March 2010

Teen Librarian
  • Created and implemented an extensive selection of weekly programs for teens ages 12-18.
  • Acted as supervisor on evenings and weekends for a staff of 5-7 union employees. 

Projects

Titusville PA Heritage Connection, an online portal that connects those seeking out historical information about Titusville, PA or genealogical information about their family with the information or local organization in Titusville, PA that would be able to best serve them. This portal was the first of its kind for this region, and since its implementation the site has attracted the attention of those from afar who seek to discover more information about the history of this region and has helped create connections between the library and its users from all around the country. The portal also showcases the library's ever increasing role in building digital capability, collecting the memories of a community, and sharing and celebrating our local stories.This project was done in collaboration with Drake Well Museum, Titusville High School Alumni Association, and the Titusville Historical Society. 

DEV DEV: summer of code, a code camp for teens that taught teens the basics of programming in Python, HMTL, and robotics, created in collaboration with nonprofits engage3D and AIGA Chattanooga and fully funded by the Benwood Foundation. This program ran for two summers (2013-2014) at the Chattanooga Public Library before becoming an official part of the curriculum for Hamilton County teachers through the Public Education Foundation of Chattanooga.

Make Art for the Library, an arts based initiative where local high school students worked with students from the Maine College of Art to design and implement artwork in the Teen Library at the Portland Public Library, May 2012.

Searching for ME, a project bringing together words and art created by teens who recently immigrated to the USA,  created in collaboration with The Telling Room,  Maine College of Art, Portland Public Library, December 2011.

Make Music at the Library, a music project that taught teens the basics of recording, engineering, music composition, and lyric writing, done in collaboration with hip hop artist Sonya Tomlinson, Portland Public Library, Summer 2011.

Game On! Envisioning Your Own Video Game , a project focused on the storytelling elements in video games where teens would write the story behind a video game and draft up basic storyboards for their creation, done in collaboration with The Telling Room, Portland Public Library Fall 2010.
